Affectees of anti-encroachment drive to get plots

Karachi: The provincial government has decided to compensate the affectees of its rigorous anti-encroachment operation along Gujjar Nullah and other city drains, news sources reported. The government would offer an 80-yard plot to the affected people in line with the commission report, which will be led by a former Supreme Court judge. To this effect, Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister on Law and Environment Barrister Murtaza Wahab has prepared a proposal for the formation of the commission that will be approved by the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. The development is associated with the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner (OHCHR)’s earlier concerns over the anti-encroachment drive going on in the city. The excerpts stated that the indiscriminate operation against the encroachment on the drain banks is alarming owing to the fact that no prior preparation and consultation was executed and no alternative land has been offered to the affected people. According to the OHCHR experts, an estimated total of 96,000 people will be affected due to the demolition of 12,000 homes along the nullahs.
